Q. Am I Welsh?

A. Nova accepts you as Welsh if you can answer yes to any of these questions:

  • I have been living in Wales for 12 months
  • I was born in Wales
  • One of my parents or Grandparents were born in Wales
  • I am registered at a school, college or university in Wales for either of the academic years 2016/17 or 2017/18
  • I graduated from a school, college or university in Wales

Q. How many artworks can I submit?

A. Please submit up to three artworks via the digital application process.

Q. What kind of artwork can I submit? Is this a painting only prize?

A. There is no limit in the medium or form of artwork e.g. it can include sound, moving images, two-dimensional , performance art, installation.

Q. Is there a maximum size limit per artwork?

A. There is no size limit.

Q. What file sizes and formats can I submit?

A. Submit only high quality images that best represent your work. Image files must be in JPEG format and a maximum 8MB per file. Ensure the image resolution is a minimum of 1000 x 1000 pixels. The ideal image size is 2732 x 2048 pixels. You can also submit audio and video files no larger than 16mb in the following formats:

  • Audio: MP3
  • Video: MP4 or MOV

Q. Does my work need to be for sale?

A. No, this is completely up to you.

Q. What are the deadlines?

A. There are two deadlines: Free Early Bird Entry: 28th of April to 21 July 2017. Standard Entry (£10 fee applies): 22 July till Midnight on the 18 September 2017.

Q. How much is it to enter?

A. It is free before 21 July and £10 until Midnight 18 September 2017.

Q. When will I find out if I am selected?

A. The selectors will be meeting on the 21st of September and we aim to let you know by September 30th 2017.

Q. My work is not for sale, can I still enter?

A. Yes. Your work does not have to be for sale but must be available for exhibition on the dates specified.

Q. Are there any restrictions on when my artwork was made?

A. There are no restrictions on when your artwork was made.

Q. Will my work need to be framed?

A. All wall based work must be framed and mirror plated.

Q. Does my triptych count as one work?

A. Yes. Triptychs and diptychs count as one work but must be represented in your submission in a single image / file.

Q. If selected, how will I transport my work to you?

A. Selected artists are responsible for transport arrangements of their work/s to and from Nova, North Wales. We reserve the right not to display work that has been damaged in transit.

Q. Does the RCA take a commission of sales?

A.The RCA take a flat rate of 40% commission (there is no VAT).

Q. If selected, will my artwork be insured?

A. Selected artists should insure their work while in transit both ways ensuring that it is adequately packed. Nova will insure your work is in its care up to the value of £10,000 per artwork.

Q. Is there a private view?

A. Yes, The private view will be held on 18 November 2017.

Q. How long does my artwork need to be available for?

A. All work must be available for exhibition 17 November - 2 December 2017 and also for exhibition at Aberystwyth Arts Centre between 17 January and 1 April 2018. This exciting touring exhibition opportunity was only confirmed at the end of August 2017, so if this is not possible for you and you have already applied. Please send an email to michael@nova.cymru and we can discuss this further.

Q. My entry contains artwork from other sources (e.g. movie clips). Do I need to acquire copyright, even for non-commercial use?

A. Yes, you are fully responsible for the clearance to use all external material. You may be required to produce documentation at any time.

Q. Do I need music/sound rights for my submission?

A. Yes. You are fully responsible for the clearance of all music or sound contained in your entry. You may be required to produce documentation at any time. Find out more at: BBC Film Network, The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers
